Improvise Corrective Action to Boost Performance

Most recent versions of ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 released in September 2015 count out “Preventive Action”.

All references to this deep-seated term have been removed from ISO standards. It is a noteworthy amendment reminding all users that ISO Standards (MSSs) is pro-actively premeditated for prevention.

Deletion of Preventive Action deals meritoriously with olden customers habitually demanding submission of CAPA (Corrective Action and Preventive Action) whenever non-conformity is noticed against the supplier & its processes. It is a distinctly highlighted change when definition of Preventive Action is mapped with real intent of the standard(s).

ISO is now relying additionally on only two left over types of actions i.e. Correction and Corrective Action to sustain long-term performance.

“Correction” is to reverse Non-Conformity whereas “Corrective Action” is to eliminate cause of Non-conformity.

Non-conformity in ISO standards is clearly defined as “Not meeting the requirements” and these requirements are measured related to products, services and related processes in organisation.  

My Indian friends would agree that “Jugad” is a popular repair skill in this subcontinent and is considered Synonym to Correction.   

Removal of “Preventive Action” from ISO standards has actually led to enhanced value expectations from “Correction” & “Corrective Action”.

I realized that inclusion of following guidelines for repairing products & processes would effective meet ISO expectations of enhanced reliability & responsiveness:

  1. No attempt should be made to hide deviations but instead a commitment need to reveal this as event in history.
  2. Indicate if a performance post repair has altered so much so that crucial carefulness for repaired product / processes must also be changed in that order.
  3. Highlight the transformation from unserviceable to invaluable and classify it as Golden Repair if performance post repair has improved significantly.
  4. Let there be sharing of wisdom that brokenness of product / processes can be refurbished successfully and efficiently.

It is believed that if breaks and scars are mended correctly, the performance of repaired product & processes would be more attractive, effective, efficient and reliable.
